What to Expect at B-Side HiFi: A Dedicated Listening Room in Provo, Utah

If you've never been to a listening room, walking in for the first time can feel a little unfamiliar. There's no stage, no bar crowd, no background music you're meant to talk over. You sit down, the lights are low, and pretty quickly you realize the record playing is the whole point of the evening. Here's what an actual night at B-Side looks like, so you know what you're walking into.

The Room

B-Side is small on purpose. We're not trying to fit as many people as possible into a space, we're trying to build a room where a good stereo actually sounds like a good stereo. That means limited seating, real quiet, and a system that was chosen to be listened to, not just played in the background. It's a sanctuary in the plainest sense: a place set apart for one thing, so that thing can happen properly.

The Rules

We keep them simple, and we keep them because they're the reason the room works. No shoes, no drinks, no food. Conversation stays low, and it happens during record flips, never while a track is playing. None of this is about being strict for its own sake, it's the same agreement every jazz kissa in Japan was built on: everyone in the room is here to listen, not to fill the silence. Once people settle into it, the rules stop feeling like rules and start feeling like relief.

How We Pick the Records

We curate the records ourselves, one month at a time, and drop the full calendar at once so you can see what's coming and plan around it. Each session is built around a single, full album, not a playlist and not a shuffle. We play across genres, not just jazz like the classic Japanese kissa. A given month might move from a jazz record to a soul album to something classical, depending on what the host wants to dig into.

Every album is presented by a host who's done the work on it. Before the needle drops, they'll walk you through some context: the story behind the recording, the musician, what was happening in their life or career when the album was made. It's a deep dive of sorts, and it changes how you hear what comes next. A session runs about 90 minutes, and some nights, once the album's finished, the host will invite guests to stay on for some additional listening.

A Third Place, Built Around Listening Together

Sociologists call it a third place, somewhere that isn't home and isn't work, where community happens because people keep showing up. B-Side works the same way. You're not just hearing a record, you're hearing it with everyone else in the room at the same moment, on the same system, with nowhere else to be. There's something that happens when a room full of strangers sits with the same album from start to finish. By the last track, they're usually not strangers anymore.
